"Radhika Rao is the most intuitive teacher I have ever had the pleasure of working with.  She and I jointly teach a theater-based social skills class for children with social challenges and those on the autism spectrum.  I have seen first hand how Radhika’s skills and creativity combined with her natural rapport with young children have positively impacted their lives.  Radhika is quick on her feet, with fun, appropriate and plentiful ideas at her finger tips that consistently draw in even the most resistant child.  We at Friends Play Group are so fortunate to have Radhika on our team and we hope this working relationship continues long into the future."- Shelley Frost, San Carlos Children’s Theater/Friends Play Group & Team Friend

FOR KIDS!

IMPROV 1 (9-11/12 yrs)

In this class, students will learn the beginner (developmentally appropriate) basics of theatrical improv (Yes-And, Responding to the Other, being Spontaneous!) and engage in playing classic improv games, creating original storylines and taking on multiple characters inspired by their imaginations and that of their peers.

Improv acting is correlated to gains in literacy, pubic speaking skills, social and other lifeskills such as confidence, leadership, and empathy.

IMPROV 2 (12/13-15 yrs)

In this class, students will learn advanced level basics of theatrical improv (Yes-And, Responding to the Other, being Spontaneous!) engage in playing classic improv games, creating original storylines and taking on multiple characters inspired by their imaginations and that of their peers. Students will work with a partner or in small groups while creating original narratives.

Improv acting is correlated to gains in literacy, pubic speaking skills, social and other lifeskills such as confidence, leadership, and empathy.

 STORYTELLING (6-8 year olds)

For 30-60 minutes, students will actively (with their bodies) read one mythological story a session and practice acting and emoting along with the story. We will explore personal connections, metaphors, and main themes present in the story. A special focus on a particular culture is available on request.

CREATIVE WRITING 1 (9-12 years): Journal Writing

With the one of the groups, I am happy to follow the journal writing theme: Where students will make journal style entries in response to certain questions asked by the instructor (e.g., What was my most fulfilling time this week? What is one thing that has challenged me today? In what ways do I exhibit kindness in my environment?).  Forms of writing that could be explored: short poems, free-writes, letters to self, etc.

CREATIVE WRITING 2 (13-15 years): Newspaper Reporting

With the other, older, group (I forget the specific age range), I would like to explore the reading and writing of news articles—reports and editorials (we could focus on local and/or international news items). The students will then produce a mock original newspaper based on a specific theme (E.g., life and times of Foster City children) that will include reports, editorials, interviews, advertisements, etc.

CREATIVE WRITING 3 (9-12/13-15 yrs): Playwriting

Through interactive means,  students will learn to write an original play with characters, plots of their choosing, and then participate in a staged reading of their written plays. Students will work in pairs. Ideal for active students who may not enjoy writing to begin with but will be engaged physically and will get to work with a writing partner.

PERSONALIZED SESSIONS- ACTING/PUBLIC SPEAKING/WRITING/EDITING:  (6 & up, including Adults of all Ages)
I am happy to offer personalized sessions in acting, public speaking, lifeskills, creative writing, as well as services such as editing and proofreading. These sessions are custom-made according to the unique needs of the client.
